ELA Grammar Wall Ideas and Activities for Middle School

Grammar Wall for Middle School Classrooms

As a middle school teacher, I find that all of my classes have a wide range of exposure to grammar fundamentals. Students come in with vastly different levels of grammar knowledge, and many concepts need more than a quick mini-lesson to stick. This makes it important to offer plenty of practice and reinforcement opportunities outside of our whole-class instruction.

For all these reasons, I needed to create an interactive resource to help my students better grasp the grammar concepts I teach during the year. The catch, of course, is that we don't necessarily get MORE time to teach grammar. The only viable solution is to accomplish more within the time we do have. Balancing these challenges inspired the creation of this Grammar Word Wall resource.

One of the things I obsess over is maximizing my classroom setup to be both welcoming and engaging. This includes making the most out of our wall space. My ELA Word Wall has been an amazing addition that gets utilized throughout the year, and these grammar words will be used in much the same way. They work as task cards, mini-posters, bulletin board content, and focus terms.

✏️ Why a Grammar Wall Works for Middle Schoolers

1. Reinforce Instruction Without Adding More to Your Plate

Most middle school ELA curricula introduce advanced grammar concepts quickly—often with little time for students to fully grasp them. Whether students are drafting a paragraph or revising for clarity, they can glance up for a quick refresher without interrupting their flow.

2. It Supports Pre-Teaching, Review, and Assessment

From bell ringers to exit tickets, this wall is versatile. You can:

  • Add focus concepts cards to your whiteboard for a new unit
  • Create exit tickets based on the newly introduced terms
  • Use it for small-group activities (laminate the cards as task cards!)
  • Review standardized test terminology quickly

3. An Evergreen Tool for This Year and Future Years!

You can start with the basics—noun, verb, adjective—and build your wall throughout the year. Add clauses, sentence types, punctuation rules, and more as they master each piece. It’s an evergreen classroom tool that adapts to every pace and path your students take.

Grammar Wall Activities

Grammar Scattergories
Break the class into small groups. Call out a category, like “nouns” or “conjunctions,” and set a two-minute timer. Groups race to write down as many grammar wall terms as they can that fit. The first team to correctly list five wins the round. This is a five-minute filler that reinforces categorization without feeling like a worksheet.

Spot the Error Editing Station
Post a short paragraph with 5-6 grammar mistakes near the wall. Students use the grammar wall as their reference tool to find and correct the errors, citing which term applies to each fix (“this is a run-on, needs a conjunction”). This works great as a warm-up or a sub plan activity since it's self-directed.

Weekly Term Spotlight
Pick one term each Monday and feature it on your bulletin board or screen, just as I rotate focus terms on my ELA word wall. Use it in your mini-lesson, reference it during writing workshop, and have students hunt for examples in their independent reading. By Friday, your students should be able to spell, define, and provide an example of the term.

Grammar Pictionary
Same rules as classic Pictionary, but the illustrator draws a grammar concept (a run-on sentence, a preposition, a comma splice) instead of guessing objects. Teams earn a point for the correct term. This activity can get loud if you don't set parameters, but that's probably why it is so impactful from a memory standpoint.

These four ideas take almost no prep once your grammar terms are displayed on a wall or bulletin board. The best part is they turn a blank space in the classroom into something students actually engage with.
